Make a fresh backup of your iPhone or iPad – important in case you want or need to downgrade to iOS 16 (Apple recommends doing a Mac or PC backup). A paid Apple Developer account is no longer needed – but you may need to sign in with your Apple ID at if the below steps don’t give you developer beta access. However, for the first time, Apple has made the developer beta free with no-cost Apple Developer access. The second developer beta is available now and Apple shared that the first iOS 17 public beta will be released in July. Apple recommends only installing the beta on devices dedicated for software development. Keep in mind the first beta will naturally include bugs and performance issues. We suggest only downloading and installing iOS updates when you’re on your home WiFi connection. Once those steps are complete, download and install the backup. Depending on the size of your phone’s storage, this can take several minutes. Your phone may need to be restored to the most recent backup.
A recent backup is necessary if something goes wrong with the update. You’ll see an option to back up the phone. In settings, tap your profile at the top of the page and scroll down until you can click on iCloud.
